Telephones

Interview with Bruce and Elvira

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Bruce: Yes. In the kitchen on our block we had several phones. We had access in our off time until lights out.
Elvira: Yes you were aloud to use the phone until lights went off.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Bruce: The calls were collect calls. I called every other day. Some called everyday. I guess I spent maybe $15 a week.
Elvira: It all depends on who your phone carrier is, but the calls range from $2 to $10. The average girl would call like 5 to 7 times a day.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Bruce: Phone cards were not available when I was there.
Elvira: The person you are calling needs to have a phone account with money setup on it already.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Bruce: I assume that they did. They said that they did.
Elvira: Oh yes they listen to your calls and record them.
