Inmates

Interview with Will

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Will: I had been incarcerated for about 2 years straight before I made my way to NY to face my charges there. I had learned better how to deal with inmates by then, and I didn't have many problems in the county jail there.

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Will: Avoid the TV. Avoid gangs. Avoid saying disrespectful things to people, especially when you are in front of other people because then they feel compelled to fight you even if they do not want to. Working out is a good deterrent, because it means people are less likely to test you, and they have exercise equipment on each block.

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Will: No. One of the best things about Orange County Jail is that you have one man cells in most of the units. You do not have a bunky or cellmates.
