Interview with April, Julie, Brenda, Cesar and Eddie
JM: How many different blocks were there? April: There were three floors for the men not sure
how many blocks on each floor and one floor
for the females with three blocks. Medium
block, the mental health unit and intake
which also serves as the hole Julie: The work release had 1 women's pod, and I think 4
men's pods. Brenda: There was 2 blocks at Lehigh County Prison. Cesar: 15 im guessing im not 100% SURE... Eddie: I believe there were at least 9
JM: Did they have names? If so, what were they? April: 4-D, & 4-C. And intake/the hole were one
block. It a depended how you were classified. Julie: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. I believe one of the mens' was not
used. Brenda: 4D was population.
4C was for mental health inmates or pregnant
woman. Cesar: they were called 1a 2a 3a 4a and so on and so
forth Eddie: A, B, C, D, I cannot remember the exact names I
believe each floor had a letter then a number went
along with it for the different blocks on each floor.
JM: Which types of inmates were housed in the different blocks? April: Inmates who didn't have mental health issues
were on medium and the rest who needed extra
attention were on the mental health unit. The
people who got in trouble were housed in the
hole. Julie: In the women's all were together. The men had I
believe 2 pods for workers. Other inmates were there
for treatment. Drug, alcohol, parenting, some men
were blue crew which I believe work for the state-
roads or something. Brenda: 4D was all the violent offenders, repeat
offenders.
4C was pregnant woman, people who have serious
mental health issues.
The would transfer woman back and fourth between
the pods if someone would claim an enemy from the
other unit or if there was a fight. Cesar: 3d was a violent block inmates with sever cases
were in there to stay away from the less sever
case or away from the rapists and juveniles with
adult cases . Eddie: There was general population. High Risk/ violent
offenders. A block for Older men. A block for
older women. Also a block for just women. Men and
women are always separated.
JM: What do you remember being the nicest and worst parts about the different blocks? April: The nicest is the fact that you were forced
to clean a couple times a week. The worst is
nothing to do and no window to look out of.
You are only allowed out of your cell
depending on which floor your on so you spend
most of the day in ur cell, with nothing to
do. Julie: The nicest was I hardly had to be there. The worst
was probably the way the whole chore system was set
up. Also it was pretty bad that there was no way up
or down from the top bunks, you climb up and jump
down or used a chair to get up and down, but chairs
are a whole other story! Brenda: 4D was too big for me. There was always a
fight. The officers didn't have patience.
4C was very crazy. Ladies would act out just to
get medication. The officers were nicer and had
more patience. Eating meal was better because
you had more time to eat. It was smaller and not
too many woman to deal with. Cesar: tv and cool guards , that made the stay there a
little more pleasant , since they were not ,
being assholes . some guards made the stay worst
by , being mean and starting problems with other
inmates that just wanted to do there time and
move on from the prison . Eddie: Most blocks have a inside basketball court which
was always nice. The bathrooms were not the
greatest since they were out in the open along
with the showers and a lot of the time were very
uncleanly. All blocks have chairs and an area with
a television which was also nice.
