JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Richard: Rec time, watch TV, smoke breaks, books. They
also had board games. I don't like board games
so I don't know what they were. Donna: We had a quiet room that had books and some games
for us to play. The guards had some art supplies
that they would let us use if we wanted to make
cards or things for our families or children.
There were also people who brought NA and AA
mettings into the jail and they offered some
classes like GED and domestic violence.
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Richard: You can only watch whatever the guards put on.
There is only one TV and the inmates don't get
to choose. Donna: We had a television and there was a piece of paper
on the wall and you could write down if there was a
certain program or movie that you wanted to watch.
There was arguments every once in a while between
people who would write down what they wanted to
watch and someone would change it.
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Richard: They let us work out, so no. You can also work
out in your own cell. Donna: YES!!! The rec room is really small with a
basketball hoop and one basketball. If you wanted to
talk you had to walk in circles in the dorm or in
the rec room which was hard to do because of the
people roaming around during the times we were out
of lockdown.
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Richard: Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Donna: We got to go outside once a day or whenever the
guards felt nice enough to let us go out. As long
as the other female dorm was not scheduled to go
out we could go out. We just sat out there and
talked and enjoyed the fresh air. We were on the
third floor so we could not see anything but the
sky. If we could no go outside there was not
really anything to do for exercise.
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Richard: Yes, every night. Donna: Our jail did have a church service on sunday in the
quiet room. I did not attend them. I prayed and read
my bible on my bunk.
