JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Mary: There was nothing to do but read, write, watch TV,
or play cards. We had an hour of recreational time
each week. During this hour, we were taken outside
and could walk around. There was a basketball goal
and some balls, but there was nothing else to
occupy our time or mind.
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Mary: There was only one TV in the female pods, and the
television only picked up about 4 channels. We
watched the news or BET all the time because those
were the only two good stations available. There
wasn't much argument over who changed the channel
because there wasn't many options to choose from.
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Mary: Since we didn't go outside very often, it was hard
to get any kind of walking/running exercise done.
But we did pass the time with exercise groups during
the day.
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Mary: We had an hour of recreational time
each week. During this hour, we were taken outside
and could walk around. There was a basketball goal
and some balls, but there was nothing else to occupy
our time or mind.
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Mary: We were allowed to attend church services three
times a week. Two times were with pastors that came
to the jail and once was with the jail's chaplain.
They were very comforting.
