Telephones

Interview with Mary

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Mary: Yes, we had regular access to telephones. They were only shut off during count time & at night.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Mary: People had to put minutes on their cell phones for inmates to call. A call lasting 15 minutes cost $2.50. I could go through $50 worth of minutes in a week.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Mary: The inmates didn't; the people we called had to have Telmate minutes on their phone.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Mary: Yes, the jail recorded and sometimes listened in on phone calls.
