Leisure Time

Interview with Tom, Oscar, Ralph, Robert and Bert

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Tom: tv books yard
Oscar: yard,church,rek
Ralph: tv for limited times in the dormitory. I don't know how the programmes were chosen but most seemed to be crime action shows! There were no books or magazines, no radio except an LA radio station piped in to the block with the small cells.
Robert: Talk and not think so much. Playing cards bible studys
Bert: county jail took us out once every few months if we were all GOOD AS THEY CALLED IT . but other than that cards ,books if you were lucky and made up games that the inmates came up with. they used cups strings and tooth paste to make up different games

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Oscar: no we get what we want in jail
Ralph: No regular entertainment that was useful for passing the time. Time dragged on endlessly and with no clocks or watches days were endless and exactly identical.
Robert: Had access
Bert: no not really . every body was suspose to regulate the tvs ,you know whites one day blacks one day Mexicans one day then old timers one day.. but you always had one person trying to run everything and that made it suck for everybody cause the tv got taken away. that's when fights normally happened

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Oscar: never just that they always repeat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch
Ralph: Not really. I was only there about 2 weeks.
Robert: No lost 10 pounds and its not from the staff not feeding me but me exercise a lot took advantage of all the time not wasting time sitting around.
Bert: no I worked out all the time . I had a hard time with the jail house food lol .

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Tom: 3 times weekly
Oscar: in tha 2 years only like about 100 times
Ralph: Once per day.
Robert: 0 my area we did not go outside I was in a day room
Bert: we rarely went out side and if you did normally you walked or did push ups if you could find a corner which was very hard to do

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Tom: yes
Oscar: yeah, on sunday and friday
Ralph: I don't know.
Robert: I seen bible study but not services
Bert: yes they did and if I remember correctly they were every Wednesday nite and yes they were very good. I loved them
