Interview with Rachel, Jason, Kat, JM Advice, Brian, DavidP, keke, Teabag, Crystal, isaac, Lucky, Kathy, Lisa, Apache, Janet, Ron, Ryan, Laetia, Dennis, Laura, Fernando, Gail, George, Rich, Mark, John, Juan, Erik, Scott, Shawn, Dominic, James, Carl, Josh and Jose
JM: Did you get off early based on good behavior? Rachel: yes i did Jason: No NA Kat: NA JM Advice: The Cook County Jail is crowded - very crowded. In an effort to
reduce the inmate population Cook County has one of the most
aggressive "Time off for good behavior" policies in the US. Brian: I wasn't there long enough to know - I think you could get off like
half your time, though. DavidP: Yes. keke: no its a county not a pen and some inmates suck
up to the gaurds snitches Teabag: Nope Crystal: Unless you do something terrible like are caught
with drugs, raping someone, or batter someone
badly, they generally will not give you a
disciplinary ticket and bring you before the
disciplinary board and take away good time
credits. State law requires mandatory day for day
good time credit (you do 50 % of the time) unless
you are charged with a disciplinary violation,
and are given a hearing with due process to
remove the good time. This is rare because the
jail is crowded. There are ways the Sheriff can
decide to send you home on electronic monitoring
or get you out earlier due to crowding. isaac: 1 day for working Lucky: no Kathy: Not done yet Lisa: no i had no cases wit cook county jail or in the
state of illinois. I was just be held at cook
county jail for the state of lake county indiana
to come and get me. Apache: yes Janet: NO NOT AT CCDOC ONLY IN THE ILLINOIS DEPT. OF
CORRECTIONS. Ron: yes Ryan: no Laetia: never sentenced Dennis: no Laura: No. Fernando: no,even though i never got wrote up for anything
there Gail: From jail no but from the rehab facility yes.I
think it was about a couple of days early.I ran the
whole house and was peer leader. George: Yes,I never got smart with officers or got into a
fight with other inmates. Rich: NO THERE WAS NO SUCH THING DONE IN COOK COUNTY JAIL. Mark: no i have never been released for good behavior.
that would of been nice especially after being
incarcerated for driving with no license. John: no I didn't get out early because in the county
there is no good time Juan: well i was released that night after probable
cause hearing Erik: NO, I PLEAD GUILTY SO I GOT PROBATION AND WAS
RELEASED SAME DAY Scott: Yes, I had 90 days taken off my sentence for good
behavior. Jason: YES I WAS RELEASED 3 DAYS EARLY FOR WORKING IN THE
KITCHEN. Shawn: no there is no such thing as good time it all gets
taken away when you go down state Dominic: I was awarded six months good time, which I had to wait for prison
officials to award me at a later time. James: no i was in and out. time served negated any good
behavior Carl: yes but in Chicago we call it day for day so i ended
up doing 30 days Josh: No but yes. With my background and this charge I
should have gone to prison. Jose: No. I did all my time and had good behavior, but
it did not reduce my time.
JM: What is the most time off you can receive for good behavior? Rachel: about 5 months Jason: NA Kat: Don't know JM Advice: Inmates who do everything they are supposed to can reduce their
sentence 50%. Brian: Half your time (I think). DavidP: 50% off. keke: none Teabag: ??? Never got any Crystal: Day for day good time credit in jail. In prison
there is day for day good time credit only for
non-violent crimes or violent crimes without much
injury to victim. Then you can in addition be
given two sets of 90 day special good time
credits, which is only for prison (felonies) and
not for jail (misdemeanor time). So if you are
sentence to 364 days jail you do 182 days. If 30
days you do 15. If sent to penitentiary and you
get 2 years, you do 6 months. If you are
sentenced to 6 years you do 3 years minus six
months or 2 1/2 years. isaac: 1 day Kathy: Don't know Lisa: n/a Apache: half + 6 months Janet: IT DEPENDS ON HOW LONG YOUR SENTENCE IS IT IS
STANDARD FOR EACH PERSON AND EACH SENTENCE. Ron: 1 half time Ryan: It depends on what programs u participate in or the it is up to the
judge. Laura: Half, I believe. Fernando: each case scenario is different my case would
have been 6 mos Gail: I can't even remember .Plus the time once given in
1997 compared to now has changed and I believe it
is significantly less. George: The most time off is 60 percent. Rich: NO SUCH THING DONE THERE. Mark: i don't know the answer to that question.no i have
never witnessed anybody for John: six months but that was in the joint Juan: i beieve half off your sentence...but thats
prison...i was only in jail thank God Erik: I AM NOT CERTAIN, I NEVER HAVE HAD EXTENSIVE
TIME IN CUSTODY Scott: I believe its 180 days. Jason: 28 DAYS WAWS CUT FROM MY SENTENCE FOR NOT GETTING
IN TROUBLE AND FOR WORKING IN THE KITCHEN Shawn: 6 months but they take that is up yo IDOC Dominic: The most time I was allowed to receive was 6 months. James: day for a day. then if you worked 2 days you got
one off Carl: the most you can get is half of your time off Josh: 1/2 your sentence because county is so crowded. Jose: You do half your time with good behavior.
JM: What types of actions do you need to avoid in order to get time off? Did you ever witness somebody losing time off for good behavior? Rachel: not fight. be good to the officers. play by
the rules Jason: NA Kat: Don't Know JM Advice: So for every one month you serve you can receive credit for an
additional month - this time off applies whether you are
sentenced to ten days (in which case you would serve five) and it
is not hard to earn. The only inmates who actually lose their
good behavior time are typically either fighting with other
inmates, using illegal drugs while incarcerated or committing
some other serious crime behind bars.
Time off for good behavior is given in addition to "credit for time
served." Brian: Fighting and talking back to guards. DavidP: Drugs is a big one. There's a lot of pot smoking in there. Where
they get it, I don't now. What I noticed was pot smoking and
fighting. You could also [lose] it for repeated disobedience to
the guards. In other words, they instruct you with lights out and
quiet time, and you're not quiet, they'll give you a warning or
two, but repeated offenses of things like that will cause it.
Another one is hassling guards. I don't know if there's any
number of times set in stone that you can do it - it's probably
based on what you did, but those are the types of things - either
drugs, or fighting, or disrespect to the guards. keke: nothing you dont get time off Teabag: Drugs, Fighting, Gang Activity, etc etc Crystal: No contraband, rape, gang activities, fights. isaac: just do what the co says Lucky: Don't break any rules. Kathy: Arguing, disobeying orders, anger issues. Lisa: n/a Apache: fighting sex durgs gambling insults recless
eyeballing escapes Janet: STEALING,FIGHTING,SEXUAL ACTIONS WITH OTHER
INMATES. Ron: fights Ryan: any tickets Laura: Unknown. Fernando: cant have write ups of no kind,no one loses good
time for good behavior, your good time is built
upon your staying bizy and out of trouble Gail: Not engage in fights and just conform to the rules
given you while having to remain incarcerated.Yes a
friend I knew since kindergarten was reprimanded. George: You need to avoid fighting and you must give
respect to the officers because they can make it
really bad for you and thats when you start to get
out of your place. Rich: FIGHTING CAN GET U ANOTHER CASE OR LOSE OF PRVILDGES
SUCH AS NO PHONE, NO RECREATION, CONFINEMENT TO UR
CELL,NO COMMISARY TO NAME A FEW. Mark: i was never aware of ever getting released for good
behavior. i have never witnessed anybody losing time
off for good behavior. i have only heard of house
arrest and that was never offered to me either. John: I had to stay out of trouble no fighting
basically not getting in trouble I have seen
people loose good time for fighting have iterms
that the place didn't approve of Juan: Know but i went too jail for domestic a year
before in michigan...i was detoxingg off
drugs..anways...i shit in the shower...i
notified them and cleaned it up but i was
punished and moved to an isolation cell where
the only thing youcan have is a bible,,,no
books ..no commisary...no t.v. nothing...just me
and thats hen i read the old testament Erik: FIGHTING, FELLOW INMATES OR WITH JAIL STAFF,
THEFT, DRUGS USING OR SELLING, STEALING, SEXUAL
FAVORS, SEXUAL ASSUALT, EXTORTION, BATTERY,
INTIMIIDATION, MISUSE OF COUNTY ISSUED MATERIALS, Scott: There cannot be any fights, or staff assaults.
you have to follow and obey all rules. Go to work
or school and just be a model inmate. Jason: YOU NEED TO AVOID FIGHT, YOU NEED TO MIND YOUR OWN
BUSINESS. DON'T MAKE YOURSELF A TARGET. KEEP TO
YOURSELF. DO WHAT THE GUARDS SAY IMMEDIATELY. Shawn: no fights no contraband breaking of the these
rules appy to come get good time yes but it really
didnt matter b/c the only thing thst matters is
what IDOC gives for time not the jail Dominic: Avoid fighting. Avoid being caught with drugs or weapons. Avoid
physical confrontations with jail officers. Avoid escape attempts. I
have seen inmates lose good time because of behavior like the
examples I gave. James: you need to avoid getting caught for breaking the
rules. notice I said avoid getting caught. the
rules are so petty to me designed to just be a
pain. you can not hang up you laundry. then what
are you supposed to do with it. a write up of a
major violation would kill you good time and maybe
get you additional if charges are filed Carl: stay away from gang activity, arguing with
corrections officers, fighting with guards or other
inmates having drugs not doing what the guards say
to do getting disrespectful with the jail staff Josh: Fighting will do it everytime. Pissing off the
judge in any way is an easy ticket. Not completing
the drug program usually will do it. Jose: You would have to avoid drug use, theft,
extortion, and those types of activities. I have
witnessed people stealing and getting moved to
another part of the jail and losing their good
behavior time.
