Pre-sentencing

Interview with Tawnie

JM: Tell us about the pre-sentencing process:
Tawnie: You are in an awaiting trial unit where you are locked down for 23 hours a day. You get to come out of your cells for an hour a day to go out in the yard or take a shower or make phone calls. You also come out of your cells for meals.

JM: Did you have police stop by your house for questioning? If not please give us details on how you came to be arrested.
Tawnie: There was a complaint filed against me and yes two policemen came by my house to speak to me then it was a few days later when they came back and arrested me.

JM: What was court like? Please give as many details as you recall.
Tawnie: This was my first offense so to me it was very scary not knowing what was going to happen and the da is very intimidating as he looked at me like I was guilty right from the start. I also remember it being a very embarraing situation. What I mean by that is having no privacy to use the bathroom and the way people look at you.

JM: What were your original charges? What did you end up being convicted of?
Tawnie: Larceny over. I was stealing from my job.
