Telephones

Interview with Jonathan and Mike

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Jonathan: Yes, there's plenty of phones, and people use them constantly. I, personally, choose not to.
Mike: Yes when you are not locked down you can use the phone.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Jonathan: Charges are ridiculously high. I think on average it'd be $25 a week. But you wouldnt be able to call every day. $25 might cover 4 calls, if you keep them reasonably short.
Mike: I think it was 4-5$ for 15-20 min, I spent no more than $20 a week though some people probably spent several hundred.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Jonathan: No. It's best if someone on the outside puts money on it.
Mike: No the person your calling needs to set up an account and pays at their end or you can use money from your canteen.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Jonathan: Yes. Al calls are screened.
Mike: Yes all calls are recorded and parties pre authorized/ approved
