Telephones

Interview with Dave and Miss

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Dave: Yes, there was a telephone in each cell. There was also a TV, toilet and a shower in each cell.
Miss: There was one phone. It was available for you to use, but were collect calls only.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Dave: We could buy phone cards. It was a couple dollars a minute. For awhile I didn't do that because it was so expensive. You could call collect, but only if you had your credit card number. They would charge it to your credit card, not the people you were calling.
Miss: It was like 10 a call.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Dave: Yes you could buy phone cards.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Dave: Probably but I don't know for sure. People said they can but I don't know if they do all the time.
Miss: Yes
