Interview with Hugh, Cameron, Sarah, Roy and Janicki
JM: What else would you want a friend or family member to know if they have a loved one going to this jail? Hugh: Be supportive, accept collect calls, write
letters, go to court, visit if you can. Cameron: It is a lonely and disheartening time. Go visit
when you get a chance. Also, put some money in the
prisoners account. Although the food is sufficient
to live on, most prisoners experience hunger just
from boredom. The only thing to look forward to to
relieve the tedium is the meals. Sarah: Send mail everyday even if it is just a postcard
or a card. The more you send the better. Sending
them books from a bookstore they will need them.
Put as much money as you can on their commissary
account every week. Visit them at every
opportunity. Be there when they get out and make
sure they have a place to go, give them a good
meal when they get out. Get them a good lawyer
that has good repore with the judge no matter the
cost. Stay positive, don't blame there is time for
that later. All your mail is read, all
your phone calls listened to and your visits too.
So watch what you say if if you are mad at the
person. Pray for the inmate everyday. Roy: i would want them to know that the best thing to
do would be to avoid any confrontation if you
can,and handle the shit you cant avoid like a man
to gain respect,or your fucked.Plus i would inform
anyone to be themself,if you go in there trying to
be something that you're not,the inmates will see
right through you and think that you're either a
under cover or a snitch....and being a snitch and
pedo are the worst two things you can be in any
jail in any country or city : See the psych doc as soon as possible, get as
many meds as you can, prepare for the worst,
commissary goes quick, write home as often as you
can, and promise to write to them, always.
JM: If somebody knows they will be serving time in this jail what is your advice to them? Hugh: Just mind your own business, read a lot, try not
get involved with people in there. They really
aren't your friends. If you see something,
don't snitch on anybody. Its boring, it sucks,
but just be respectful of others and do your
time. Cameron: Start getting exercise before you go. When the
other prisoners see that you can easily do fifty
push-ups and fifty sit-ups they will not be as
likely to challenge you. Avoid confrontations
while going through the intake process. Sarah: Don't show fear, even if you are afraid. Never
show any weakness - fake it, they will destroy
you. Get a blue mat. When you see the doctor
tell them you have a bad back back and get an
order for a second mat. Also try to get an order
for a second blanket. Get an order for the
diabetic diet. Get and order for tylenol, asprin
what you use and vitamin C. Don't drink the
juice. The first week is the hardest so stay cool
that week, you will get to know the routine. The
hardest part of the day is between lunch and
dinner keep occupied, read a book, exercise. Make
friends with the deputies even if they are nasty.
Beware the friendly people. Stay away from the
trouble makers. Don't talk about your case to
anyone - never. They will press you on this.
Don't give any details of your life. Try to make
friends with the best people you can find, but
never forget they are not your friends. Keep
occupied, exercise, eat right. Get the bottom
bunk if you can. Don't get an end room you will
freeze. Don't get too much money on you
commissary account people will constantly want you
to buy things for them. Have you family replenish
your commissary account for just what you need for
a week or two. They will find out how much you
have. Get a spoon as fast as you can and hold on
to it. Stock up on toilet paper. Women ask for
you tampon allotment every shift even if you are
not on your period. Have your family send you
books. Don't get involved with others no matter
how lonely - don't. If you have a serious charge
against you don't talk. Other inmates will try to
get you talk so they can use what you said with
prosecutor to get out in exchange for testimony
about what you said. You are a prize room mate.
Get a room with a view one that has the materials
off the small windows. It does wonders to see
activity of outside world or view of city. Roy: do your time smart, dont start shit, just finish it.if
you're lucky you wont encounter to much, but there
isnt any around it,one way or another someone wont
like you or you wont like someone and shit is going
to hit the fan.some people respond to respect with
respect, thats your best hope : County time was the hardest time of my life. I
would tell them to kite the nurse and tell them
that they are hearing voices so you can get psych
meds asap. That's the ONLY way you could survive
any significant amount of time at Wayne county.
Psych meds make things more bearable. Sleeping
your time away is what's up.
