Interview with Hugh, Cameron, Sarah, Roy and Janicki
JM: How often could you receive visitors? Hugh: It goes by your last name. If you are A-D you
get Tues and Thurs, and then there is a set time
on the weekend. Cameron: I do not know. I never had a visitor. My
girlfriend had a new guy within days after I was
arrested. Sarah: Once a week, for about 30 minutes.
Your lawyer can come as often as necessary which
usually isn't very often. Roy: couple to few times a week an selected days during
selected visiting hours for about a half hour ata
time : I never had anyone visit me in jail. I don't want
my family to see me like that. I think you can
get visits 2x's a week.
JM: Was the check-in process lengthy for those who came to see you? Hugh: You have to make sure you don't have any
warrants when you come, because you won't
leave. You come in, sign in, they search you. Cameron: How the hell would I know. I just told you that I
never had a visitor. I do understand why there is
a word minimum, but when it absolutely does not
apply there should be a few questions that could
be skipped. But, there are the required words. Sarah: Yes, you have to stand in line at the main
entrance. Again yo have to fill out of form with
social worker with list of person who will visit.
If they weren't on the list they could not visit.
Then they had to wait to be taken up in an
elevator to the floor accompanied by staff. Then
they had to wait in a little room for the deputies
to bring you from the cell area. Roy: no not really,i think after doing the same routine
day in and day out the gaurds stop giving a shit
after a while and dont search as intimately as
perhaps they should : I would imagine. Nothing is quick at painless at
Wayne county. There are so many little,
ridiculous rules that you need to follow, it's
horrible.
JM: What was the visiting environment like? Hugh: The visits are non-contact through glass. There
are five or six booths on each floor. Cameron: Jesus Christ. I just went over this in the last
question. If a person never received a visit there
is no way they could possibly answer this
question. I will use my imagination. I assume it
looked like the visiting room from the movie
"TWINS", starring Danny Devito and Arnold
Schwarzenegger. There were probably telephones to
speak to each other because there was most likely
glass to kepp you apart. Sarah: It is a grungy dirty jail. You are in a little
room on a steel seat with no back. If you have
more then one visitor sometimes they had an extra
chair sometimes the visitor had to stand. There is
a glass partition with a little area round area to
facilitate talking. Uncomfortable and cumbersome. Roy: very family oriented, they do a good job of giving
you a little bit of privacy, which is hard to come by
in jail, you cant touch your visitor or anything, but
just being able to have private discussions with
someone you care about in such a trying time is
pivotal for anyones well being : It was awful. Just awful. You sit on one side of
the glass while your visitor sits on the other
side. There is no contact at all. There isn't
even a telephone to use to hear each other. You
have to yell thru an awkwardly placed hole in the
glass.
