Interview with Hugh, Cameron, Sarah, Roy and Janicki
JM: Did you get off early based on good behavior? Hugh: Yes, you can get Cameron: Since I had cases in Wayne and Oakland Cos. I went
back and forth between the two jails. I was
destined for prison, so NO I did not get off early
for good behavior. Sarah: you get 1 day off for 30 days I guess this was for
good behavior but this term was not discussed.
Good behavior in jail is a misnomer. It means you
did not beat up others (severely) or kill someone
just about everything else was ok. Roy: no i did not,i got off early because the defendant
dropped the charge, because i never actually talke
d to him,let alone assaulted him,it was the guy i
got locked up with that threatened him with
violence and a knife, but he was doing that all
day, kept pulling his knife off waving it in
peoples faces like an idiot,i had to man handle
him once that night when he started to wave it at
a former boss of mine that i had tons of respect
for and definitely no animosity towards : No. My sentencing was 4 months in rehab so there
was no early release for me.
JM: What is the most time off you can receive for good behavior? Hugh: You can get 1/4 of your sentence taken off with
the judges approval. You can write a letter to
a judge or get involved in the drug program. If
you're in for a non-violent offense, the tend to
let you out earlier. There is a lot of
overcrowding. Cameron: I have no idea what the limits are. In prison
since they passed the truth in sentencing law you
must serve the full minimum. Sarah: They don't really have this concept. One day for
every 30 days. Sometimes they would let people go
with lesser charges if there was an overcrowding.
Some went home on a tether. Roy: not sure how that works but im sure it isnt to
much, prettymuch everyone is good fromt ime to
time, they just got restless and bored and act
up,like my third night there, all the younger
inmated i mentioned filled up cool shots cartons
with their own piss and had a huge piss
war, throwing piss filled cool shot cartons at each
other fromt he quarantine cells i spoke of earlier : I think they cut your time in half once you are
sent to Dickerson.
JM: What types of actions do you need to avoid in order to get time off? Did you ever witness somebody losing time off for good behavior? Hugh: Just don't cause any trouble, try to be a
trustee. A lot of times they ask for volunteers
to help clean up. Get involved in different
programs. They have a GED program, NA/AA
programs, church. If they see you are doing the
right things and that you are doing the things
to change. Cameron: I would imagine a little common sense would go a
long way here. Unfortunately there was a veritable
dearth of common sense in that place. Avoid fights
and gambling (which causes many fights). Keep to
ones self. I never saw anyone lose time off. Sarah: Never saw anybody lose time. They early release
base on type of conviction and overcrowding
status. They threatened extention of time for
really bad behavior but that meant extreme
violence. Which was rare except for 1 individual
I encountered. Roy: yes actually a friend of mine got a month off
because he was a trusteee and never stole extra
milks and did as the officers asked of him in a
timely and polite fashion : If you are smart, you can do whatever you want in
jail. If you are caught doing something major,
you will be required to see your judge again and
he/she will decide whether or not you'll lose
your good behavior time.
