Telephones

Interview with Freya, Jen and Cathy

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Freya: yes
Jen: Yes.
Cathy: Yes..there were 4 phones in the Unit.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Freya: More than $8.00 just to make a call, plus time charges.
Jen: There was an initial connection charge for each call made, than $1.50 a minute on top of that- all calls are given a 20 minute time limit, but you could make as many 20 minute calls as you had money for.
Cathy: I heard some of the female inmates complain that it cost $25.00 to make a call out-of-state. For local calls, there was a connection charge for each call and $1.50 per minute on top of that.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Freya: no- they used my commissary account. Their website said that an Inmate Internet Telephone company could use a credit card to charge calls, but it never worked.
Jen: No phone cards-you did need to have enough money in your commisary account to cover the call.
Cathy: No, the money was taken out of your commissary account

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Freya: yes
Jen: Yes.
Cathy: Yes
