Telephones

Interview with Ryan and Kathryn

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Ryan: In the minimum security yes, but not in the medical ward because we were locked down so often.
Kathryn: Yes

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Ryan: I'm not sure how much it costs, but i know that my wife would spend about 75 dollars a week to load her phone card so we could talk and we only spoke on the phone once a day
Kathryn: The phone calls are very expensive, i had to limit my calls to twice a week

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Ryan: no you do not. the person you call can have one or they can get charged a toll for the call
Kathryn: No, the receiver on the outside had to set up a phone account

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Ryan: yes they would listen in on your calls
Kathryn: Yes, they said they did
