JM: Did you get off early based on good behavior? Kristen: yes, I had a good history when I was in prison and
did everything that was asked of me. Renee: I was sent to work release for good behavior
twice, but the first time I was there I failed a
drug test and was sent back to the prison where I
was put on a 10 day double lock, where I could
not leave my cell for 10 days, and had to stay
two months longer than my 11 and a half months. Chad: In Pennsylvania, most county sentences are a range.
You can usually get out at your minimum with good
behavior. I do not know of any way to get out
earlier than your minimum. Dennis: No. I dont think that Erie County follows that
kind of system.
JM: What is the most time off you can receive for good behavior? Kristen: whatever your minimum sentence is. My minimum for
the last DUI was 12 months and my maximum was 24
months. I had a RRRI that got me out in 9 months. Renee: 5 days for every month you do. Chad: I did not know of any way to get out earlier than
my minimum. There may be a way for inmates who
receive longer county sentences. If they do work
for the jail (kitchen, cleaning, etc.) and all of
their fines and costs are paid; they may be given
credit for time served based on the number of
hours they work. Dennis: Again i dont think that pertains to the Erie
County way of doing things although you can get to
go to a work release program.
JM: What types of actions do you need to avoid in order to get time off? Did you ever witness somebody losing time off for good behavior? Kristen: Fighting, stealing, escaping, trading/selling,
smuggling in drugs, etc. Many inmates lossed time
and earned new charges which landed them in the
prison system longer. Not something you want to do. Renee: You have to avoid going to the restricted housing
unit, or maximum security. Generally inmates
ended up being put in maximum security for
getting more than three tickets in a 30 day
period. If you were placed in R.H.U close to your
minimum date you had to stay until your time was
up. Chad: I did not get my self involved in others'
situations. I've seen people get written up in
jail and not get out on their minimum. Dennis: As far as the work release program is considered
in order to get there and stay there and not be
sent back to the regular prison, you have to stay
away from drugs and alcohol. You have to follow
all the rules and regulations set up by the Dept.
Of Corrections. And not committing crimes of course.
