Inmates

Interview with Mark

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Mark: the first time i was in the somerset county jail,it was very violent at the time, there was a lot of inmate hazing, ppl being beat half to death, and there where a few ppl that actually committed suicide due to how badly they were being beaten.so,if you were placed in the jail,it was a hard time depending how you carried yourself and who you knew.

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Mark: i was very lucky, right at the time i was incarcerated all the hazing had become public, the warden was fired, along with many guards, but, you really had no way to control it back then, you could move around freely and enter any cell you'd like.i avoided it all by being as laid back as i could.now, the jail is back to normal and theres not to many problems.

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Mark: you are not allowed to choose your cell mate, but, they pair ppl up by how they enter the jail,so you can end up with anyone for a cellmate.you uaually end up with new cell mates often,it really just depends on who you get and how long their sentence is.
