Leisure Time

Interview with Isaac

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Isaac: Nothing. The county jail has nothing. I preferred reading books that someone from the outside would send me. They had tv,, but it depended ont he guard and what mood he was in, you could barely hear it most times. the inmates played cards, but they really weren't allowed, so thay never lasted.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Isaac: There was no entertainment except the tv. I watched sometimes when a football game was on, but it was too hard to hear and sometimes it would just go out for no reason. Most guys just walked in a circle around the pod. You couldn't run or talk loud or you would go to the shoe.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Isaac: not really. I don't have that gaining weight problem, but some guys walked and just did exercises in their cell.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Isaac: We had a small area to go outside, but there was nothing to do. You just stand there or walk around and think or talk to other inmates.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Isaac: Yes. They were held on Sunday morning. It was usually a simple mass. I liked to go and pray. It made me feel like I was home.
