Interview with Lola, Eve, Pat, Peter, Al, Trevor and Camille
JM: What else would you want a friend or family member to know if they have a loved one going to this jail? Lola: I think the guards are aware of everything, and
it is pretty safe. Your loved ones are in good
hands if they follow the rules, and hang on
until their release. Eve: If you are going to visit, try to get there early
as the lines can be long. Visits are 30 minutes
long and only 1 person can go back at a time
unless you split the visit and 1 person goes back
and then the other. Have your photo ID and a
second form of ID like a social security card,
insurance card, ACCESS card, birth certificate,
etc. Women - do not wear anything shorter than
mid-thigh or they will send you home! You cannot
bring anything in to them, such as shoes, clothes,
etc. There are special days and times for
children to visit and it's only the child of the
inmate allowed with proof (it has to be a birth
certificate - they don't accept anything else any
more). Pat: no Peter: If a person knows they are going to be
incarcerated in YCP i would recommend wearing tow
pair of socks, grey tie-less elastic waist band
sweat pants two white t shirts and tennis shoes as
those items are permitted within the jail to wear
in housing blocks for comfort ( also available for
purchase on commissary) Al: respect others and respect the staff and keep out
of trouble, york county prison is not as bad as
other facilities cause you are allowed out of your
cell from 7 in the morning till 11 pm Trevor: please stick by him/her because it is very tough
and stressful in there. things they need are
commissary for food and cosmetics but most of all
and more than anything else are a phone call once
in a while. when in there we need someone to lean
on and someone who will stand by us
100 %
% Camille: I would tell them to make sure they get the
vegetarian or diabetic food tray. I would tell them
to make sure they send their loved ones reading
material and to visit because jail is a rough place.
JM: If somebody knows they will be serving time in this jail what is your advice to them? Lola: Again, stick to yourself, use the time for self
healing. Eve: If you have a medical problem, you have to put in
a request slip to be seen by medical unless it's
an emergency. Don't expect the guards or anyone
else to respond quickly to anything you request.
Usually the guards are respectful if you are to
them; but they're used to dealing with a-holes so
they might have an attitude sometimes with you.
Keep your cool. You will get more information
from asking other inmates than you will from
asking the guards. Read over the handbook but it
definitely doesn't cover everything. You kind of
learn as you go. Pat: no Peter: Do not focus on how long the person will be in.
Focus on getting a daily routine going to pass the
time easier. If they think about the release date
constantly time will "go slower" also do not
stress about what is going on at home....their
lives go on the inmates is the one that "stops"
everything will still be there when they get
out....the phones are known as the "stress box" as
they bring the tears and sadness of missing loved
ones more than mail does. Al: my advice would be stay active and do something
with your time like aa and bible study. also apply
for work in the kitchen you get fed better and you
get paid Trevor: prepare yourself like eat less and prep your body
because being hungry really hurts, or make sure
you have commissary and try to have someone on
the outside, in there you are helpless alone. Camille: Well, I guess I would tell them to keep to
themselves, don't talk about other people because it
always gets out to the wrong person and to do all
you can to get out of having to serve time.
JM: Please list any other jail or rehab facilities you have been to. Eve: None. Pat: none Peter: Cumberland County, Carlisle PA
Blair County, Hollisdaysburg PA
Perry County, New Bloomsfield, PA Al: fairfax county jail in VA AND MANAHOY STATE PRISON
IN PA Trevor: rrj in Stafford va, along with the diversion
center there, and that's it Camille: Baltimore City jail once.
