Interview with Lola, Eve, Pat, Peter, Al, Trevor and Camille
JM: What clothes could you have brought in to wear in the jail (underwear, socks, etc.)? Lola: Blue chino pants, and blue workshirt Eve: You get 2 sets; usually one jump suit and then a
2-piece with shirt and pants. You also got 2
white t-shirts to wear underneath. Pat: sweats sweat shirts thermals socks bras boxers
and ur carrot clothes Peter: All clothing had to be purchased from commissary (
sock underwear tshirts thermal tops and bottoms)
Inmates were not permitted to have family bring in
clothing items at York County Prison Al: you could bring nothing in,all stuff must be
bought off the commisary from the jail Trevor: nothing but your underwear. they provided whites
like boxers tshirt and socks. but only a limited
amout and only once do theyt give them to you. Camille: You can only wear your own clothes into the jail
which they take when you are issued your
dehumanizing orange jump suit that tells the guards
you aren't worth an ounce of respect.
JM: If you had a set uniform, what did it look like? Please be specific about each piece of clothing issued to you. Lola: Blue chino pants and blue workshirt Eve: Orange uniforms. Pat: orange suit Peter: Clothing issued was two jumpsuits that buttoned in
the front from neck to crotch areas. They were the
normal orange color with YCP on the back. The
prison also issued flip flop style shower shoes,
no underwear or socks ( inmate was permitted to
keep what was worn in as far as socks and
underwear and tennis shoes or such with no metal
on the lace holes etc etc) Al: you were issued 2 jumpsuits and they were on peice
uniforms, they would be washed 2 times a week and
sometimes you were issued on that didnt fit you Trevor: 1 piece jumpsuit button up or Velcro up the
front. very used and recycled over and over. but
we kept our own shoes and if you had none a pair
of shower sandals and a pair of cheap slip ons
was provided. Camille: Orange jump suit. That is the set uniform. You get
to keep your own shoes. You might get a pair of
flip flops for the shower (which is shared by 97
other women). I was issued two pair of underwear,
two bras, two pair of socks and two orange jump
suits.
JM: Were there any assigned clothes in high demand that an inmate should look for when getting clothing assigned? Lola: No, we just needed to check our sizes Eve: Usually no one wants the jumpsuits, but you don't
get a choice unless you switch with someone else. Pat: ? Peter: the clothing was a normal style demand in YCP every
one issued the same amounts of each.....the
condition (new torn etc) was the factor to look for
as well as proper size......most inmates end up
with a size bigger than they wore due to constant
turn overs Al: no all jumpsuits are one piece and everyone got 2
of them Trevor: yes t shirts and socks are big and boxers are
next. also you can trade a t shirt pair of socks
and pair of boxers for a pack of oodles and
noodles or a soup as they are called in jail. Camille: I can't say. I liked the two piece jumpsuit, but
some women liked the one piece. What was in demand
were the newer ones because their sizing was more
accurate.
JM: Was the clothing different between men and women? Lola: No Eve: No. Pat: no Peter: Different Colors.....men wore orange women wore
blue workers wore white or red Al: no there was no difference Trevor: they are the same oranges but they get a lot of 2
piece verses the coverall 1 piece suit. Camille: No, the clothing was the same for each gender.
