Telephones

Interview with Seth, Ellen and Isaac

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Seth: yes in your dorm where you lived
Ellen: YES ONCE WE WERE ALLOWED OUT
Isaac: We were given access to telephones multiple times a day unless the unit was on lockdown.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Seth: collect call charges depend who you would call how much they would be charged to
Ellen: SOME SPOKE DAILY OTHERS WEEKLY SOME NOT AT ALL. I CALLED WEEKLY AND IT COST MY FAMILY $30 FOR 9 CALLS AT 12 MINUTES EACH
Isaac: The calls are like $1.50 for the first minute and then 50 cents a minute after that. There really is no average phone user but the money can add up very fast.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Seth: no they did not allow that
Ellen: NO PHONE CARDS WERE USED.
Isaac: Your family has to purchase the airtime for you to call. You are given one 30 second call to let them know they need to set up the account and after that if there is no money in the account you can't call.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Seth: yes they would and you did not know it
Ellen: YES ALL CALLS ARE RECORDED
Isaac: Yes. They tell you before every call that it is subject to monitoring and recording.
