Meals

Interview with Lou and Cindy

JM: How many meals did you get per day?
Lou: 3 meals.
Cindy: 3 meals a day, every day.

JM: How would you rate the food? Please give details of why.
Lou: Better than Plano. The bigger facilities have better food. You get a tray with a meat and starch and sometimes a vegetable.
Cindy: The food was all right. I had never been much of a big eater until I went to jail, and I was so hungry all the time. They had this real basic juice for every meal, and some awful coffee in the mornings, and water, and the food was usually fresh, good quality, though you could tell it came out of a freezer.

JM: Did you have any favorite/least favorite meals?
Lou: That's a tough one. They served this turkey and dressing deal that wasn't too bad. The worst is usually the sandwiches with stale bread and meat that isn't all that great.
Cindy: I really liked the tamales, salad when they had it, pudding, I hated the baloney, the bean soup, liked the cake. probably should've cut down on the sweets.

JM: Were there any other snacks offered outside of meals? What was commissary like and how expensive was it?
Lou: Canteen is once a week. You could get snacks from them.
Cindy: Commissary wasn't expensive if you had someone putting $60 on your books every week. If you didn't have that much or more you felt like you weren't getting enough. I never spent more than $10.
