JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Ben: Writing, reading, working out, watching t.v.,
playing board games or sleeping. Laura: An outdoor basketball area of sorts, a "library",
televisions, and that was about it. There wasn't
much offered to help pass the time. There were a
few classes like Narcotics Anonymous, Alcoholics
Anonymous, Bible Study, and an art class but even
those were few and far between. The days passed by
pretty slowly.
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Ben: Well, when it came to the t.v., you had to let
everyone know ahead of time that you want to
watch something to sort of 'reserve' the t.v.,
but that only works sometimes. Laura: People cared less about the televisions and the
entertainment than they did about the microwaves.
That is where the competition got fiercest. The
between meal meals and coffee are sacred to the
inmates. People will fight over a few seconds in
the microwave and an officer will take away some
ramen so fast your head will spin.
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Ben: No, I had alot of downtime so I think I became
more in shape while in jail then I would in the
free world. Laura: It wasn't any more difficult staying in shape in
jail than out of jail. I'm not really big on
working out either way.
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Ben: In the Lubbock Co Jail, you had a gym type room
you got to play around, run etc., or a small
outside area with one basketball goal. Depended
on which cell you were in depended on what kind
of rec. you got to do. Laura: Daily if I chose to, though I chose not to. I
could walk around, play hand ball, do sit ups, do
push ups, whatever I please. Pretty much whatever
I would do outside.
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Ben: They offered church services quite alot but I
never participated in them. Laura: The jail offered bible study which I suppose was
like a church service. I never went though. I'm
not a religious person so that didn't suit me.
