Leisure Time

Interview with Shelia

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Shelia: There were books, uno cards, playing cards, pen and paper , and ttelevision. I also braided other inmates hair. Balls were avaliable if you wanted to go outside. There was a law library for inmates with no lawyer. The main thing to do to pass time was to interact with the other inmates or read.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Shelia: Competition was fierce when it came to the books and games. If you wanted a certain book or game you simply had to beat the next chick to it. There wasnt competition over the television because the guards controlled what was watched. Competition wasnt vbad though because we were all willing to share.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Shelia: I didnt have a hard time staying in shape because I'm slim. I didnt work out but I was active when possible.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Shelia: I was allowed to go outside three times per time. To stay active when not outside I would usually just walk around inside my cell.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Shelia: Yes there was church services on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Wensdays. The services were mostly bible study and prayer requests and circles. The Speakers always brought handout with words of inspirations and bibles for those who needed one. Church was the only good thing about jail.
