Inmates

Interview with Dorothy

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Dorothy: Yes, because there are some really crazy people that are wacked out of there mind in jail. Some people can handle it and others cannot. It is hard when you have to share 1 toilet and 1 shower and 1 hot pot and 1 TV with 8 women. Also being confined for so many hours a day without sunlight can make a person crazy.

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Dorothy: I decided to make Trustee so that I could work and not be lazy and get fat from the disgusting food they serve. I was able to contact my family everyday and I read a lot of books and wrote letters to my family. I counted my days down by keeping up with how many times I had left to do certain things and that was really helpful. I counted the hours and days off for fun! You too much time to think so why not!!!

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Dorothy: No, they would not house people together if you knew each other and especially if you came in together on the same charges. Cellmates could change hourly or daily. Sometimes on busy holidays you would get several in a couple of hours all through the night.
