Leisure Time

Interview with Allan, Clayton and Gabi

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Allan: There are no books available to the inmates. 2 TV's for 100 people. Board games.
Clayton: A tv , cards, books, and checkers
Gabi: nothing

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Allan: The guard would ask what everybody wanted to watch and nobody really cared unless there was a football game.
Clayton: books were not readily available. Cards were played but I never joined. Watched a little tv
Gabi: you had 2 tvs per pod one group would choose something and the other would watch something else, but some of the shows like american idol adn singing programs were out but, they can watch football or what ever

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Allan: Yes... you weren't allowed to exercise in your cell because they said you would get hurt. They would confiscate empty soda bottles and trash bags with water in them that guys would use to lift weights. The only real physical thing you could do was walk around the perimeter of the half court and play basketball.
Clayton: Yes. There is nothing except a small basketball yard and you cannot really play in the sandals they make you wear
Gabi: extrememly they had a small courtyard all concrete and we didnt have much time out there, we spend more than 19 hours in a cell and 3 to a cell at one point a set of bunks and a boat on the floor so you couldnt do any sort of excersize

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Allan: Once or twice a day into an enclosed area, with a chain link fence at the top so you could see the sky.
Clayton: not often
Gabi: 1x they dog kennel they put you in you couldnt move if 25 women went out you didnt have room to move or walk jsut stand there it was horrible

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Allan: Yes, they did church services and AA.
Clayton: I think so but I was never told when
Gabi: yes, they were nice just the fact you got out of the pod for 15 mins they were held in a class room environment.
