JM: Did you always have access to necessary medications? Allan: No. If you go in with prescription drugs, they
take them away from you and won't give them
back. There was a guy I was in the drug rehab
with, and he had HIV. He would get so sick and
they wouldn't let him see a nurse until he was
almost dead. I had another cellmate with gout.
It was very painful and he had a hard time
getting out of bed. We got him out of the cell
but he couldn't get himself back in. He wasn't
getting his medication for the gout. The only
way we got him medical attention is that a
friend on the outside called an ambulance and
asked them to go to the jail to help this guy. Clayton: Not at first . I didnt get my medications that I brought in with
me until my 3rd day. Gabi: not always,
JM: How did you get your medications? Allan: Med call came around twice a day. 9am and 7pm.
The nurse would come around and stand in the
cluster. They would call your name and they
would watch you take it. Clayton: They would bring a med cart and you would take them once a
day even if you were supposed to take some of them twice a day. Gabi: nurses would come 2x a day to issue meds but
they crused everything together and very little
water to take with. i was on valporic acid which
was depakote and it burn the inside of my
esophagus and stomach. it clearly states on the
script do not crush or chew. they never read the
instructions i guess
JM: What types of punishments were incurred for abuse of drugs? Did you ever witness this? Allan: If they catch you with an aspirin that you
aren't supposed to have, you will receive an
institutional charge and thrown in solitary.
They could make a street charge out of it by
charging you with having contraband. One guy
got thrown into isolation for about a week
because he had an aspirin or a motrin in the
bottom of his tote. Gabi: people would get put in isolation for what ever
period they are charged with
