Inmates

Interview with Scott, Elna, Todd and Guy

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Scott: No it wasnt that hard it was only a two man cell and we was lucky if we even got out an hour a day. There wasnt much inmate interaction
Elna: There were certainly some inmates that tried to make me uncomfortable. Some even told me I should fight the ones who were giving me a hard time. I tried to keep to myself and just not say anything to anyone.
Todd: i never found it difficult to get along with other inmates
Guy: tried to just stay to myself but doesn't always work. Read a lot of books and there are always going to be assholes so you just deal with them and things seem to work themselves out. you can meet a few friends in there but just have to be careful what u get caught up in.i'm pretty easy to get along with so it wasn't too bad .

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Scott: I stayed alot to myself and didnt get involved in any gambling or get into any debt with anyone. Didnt disrespect anybody if possible and stayed out of everybody's business. I also played chess and hung out with older in mates who didnt get into trouble and i prayed ot
Elna: I kept to myself mostly, if I was approached by another inmate I would answer their questions briefly and be on my way. I spent most of the time in the "bed" that was provided for me which was a slab of metal with a thin mat covering the top of it.
Todd: i'm a big fella so i never really had to deal with any one wanting to approach me in any unwanted manner
Guy: Walk away. stay away from known trouble. watch your back ALWAYS. I had 1 fight while i was there. one of the other inmates thought i was the police because i didn't cause any trouble so he decided he wanted to find out if i was the police or not...i was not

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Scott: Normally you could not choose your cellmate but some gaurds would let you move cells but not very many of them. I never could get moved when i tried the only way i got a new cellmate is if one got out. Which happened five times during my incarceration
Elna: I was given no choice on cellmate, however they did ask each person if they were affiliated with a gang so as to keep the gangs seperate. The fact that there were gangs in there at all was enough to frighten me.
Todd: i didn't choose
Guy: I got to choose 3 roomates while I was there. jail chose others. I had over 17 inmates/cellmates while I was there. you never knew who or what you would get you might get 2 cellmates in a day
