Telephones

Interview with Scott, Elna, Todd and Guy

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Scott: Yes when i went to the workers pod but not in the other units
Elna: The inmates who were there for a while did, but I did not because I had no way of paying for it. It takes several weeks for any money to get into your account and I was only there overnight.
Todd: yes
Guy: if you could afford them. $7-15 PER CALL IF YOU HAD THE MONEY.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Scott: It was two dollars and fifty cents for a local call. The average inmate probably spent twent dollars a week
Elna: I honestly have no clue about this question, I didn't speak to many inmates about that.
Todd: don't know never used the phone it was through paytell
Guy: i TRIED TO KEEP IT CHEEP SO I SPENT ABOUT $8 week it was hard on my family to keep sending me money to use the phone system

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Scott: No they do not have phone cards but you could.money on a phone account
Elna: Yes, I do know you had to have a phone card because I tried calling out and wasn't able to without a card.
Todd: inmates didn't
Guy: no. but you had to put money on the phone account run by the jail

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Scott: Yes they did if they suspected anything
Elna: The only call I made was when I was first taken in and we were given one free call. I called my mother and I don't believe it was screened.
Todd: i would say yes
Guy: they said they did but never had any problems
