JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Henry: Facilities? There are no other facilities. Once
you get into a housing unit, your not going to
leave that unit unless your going to see the
doctor or you have a visit. There is a very
small recreation yard which is just a slab of
concrete thats fenced in out in the sun that you
get to spend one hour in a day if the weather
permits. They also have a GED class a few hours
a week, but it is a complete joke. Trying to
further your education or get your GED in there
would be about impossible.
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Henry: They do not allow volume on any of the
televisions and they control what station it is
on, so not too many people even watch TV..but
its there if you want to. Besides that the only
other entertainment is playing cards or chess,
which usually stick to certain groups. If you
haven't made friends or you know someone that
owns some playing cards, then you probably won't
be entertaining yourself in that way.
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Henry: Yes its very hard to stay in shape in that
facility. The meals are awful and pretty small,
so not many people wanna burn off all the
calories they have access to. I use to do a few
sets of push-ups and sit-ups every night, which
is the only option really considering there is
no room or equipment for exercise. But I was in
pretty awful shape once I got released.
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Henry: That all just depends on the weather. You can't
go outside if it is raining or storming in any
way or it is over ninety degrees. If weather
permits though they allow you around an hour
outside every day. It is just a fenced in slab
of concrete, so the only thing people do out
there really is just walk in circles or sit out
in the sun and relax. Besides that, you can
either walk around the unit or get creative with
things to lift to exercise.
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Henry: The jail had no official church service. Various
volunteers would stop by and do a bible study or
small group randomly. It was usually pretty nice
when they would have a group though. There was
about five or six seperate volunteers that would
come do it, so you pretty much had to choose
which guys you liked or didn't like and catch
them when they come in to lead a group.
