Telephones

Interview with Henry

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Henry: Yes. There is a few payphones on the back wall of every one of the seperate sections, but you have to either have a phone card or you have to call collect.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Henry: It is way too expensive. Phone cards are around twenty dollars for usually about three seperate fifteen minute phone calls. If you call collect though it's usually more expensive..it's usually around close to two dollars a minute. It's much less expensive to just write letters. For the first few weeks I was in I was spending around twenty dollars a week on phone calls, but I quickly stop doing that and just started writing letters and only making around one phone call a week.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Henry: No. You can call collect. But, you can't call cell phones collect. So if your trying to get a hold of someone who does not have access to a landline then you will have to buy a phone card to call.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Henry: Yes. They have the right to screen or monitor any phone call made by an inmate. I don't know how much time they spend on that or how many calsl they actually listen in on, but I would assume that it would probably be quite a lot.
