Inmates

Interview with Shawn, Tom, Linda, Margaret and Laura

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Shawn: No, it's easy to get alons as long as you don't bring problems for yourself or be disrespectful
Tom: I got along with other inmates without much of a problem. I did a lot to keep to myself but there always was one person to screw it up for the rest of us when it came to exercise time being cut or getting sack lunches for dinner.
Linda: I didn't find it difficult to get along with other inmates. I didn't really socialize or get into other peoples drama or business. I just tried to sleep as much as I could because it was so depressing.
Margaret: NO NOT REALLY. BASICALLY, I DIDNT BOTHER ANYBODY AND NOBODY BOTHERED ME. AS LONG AS YOURE RESPECTFUL AND COURTEOUS TO OTHERS, THEYLL RETURN THE FAVOR. ONCE IN AWHILE THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT ARE JUST TOO MUCH AND CONFLICT ARISES. FOR THE MOST PART THOUGH, EVERYONE JUST TRIES TO MAINTAIN.
Laura: I got along with everyone,my own race didnt particularily care for me, thinking I was "whitewashed". I would watch a moviewith what they called "tweeker bitches" or I would play cards with the Latinas. I respected everyone and didnt steal or start any trouble so I WAS OK.

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Shawn: Be repectful. Stoy out of people business. Avoid other people's problems, keep to myself and my opinions to myself.
Tom: The one thing I always hated was you pretty much keep to your own race. I met a few cool people outside my race there and I really wasnt allowed to associate with them at all with all that prison bullshit they do in county. One guy was "disiplined" by the white people because he paid for a picture one of the black guys drew with a bag of chips.
Linda: You have to give everyone respect and not touch anyones stuff. You have to share the toilet and shower so you have to be courteous and make sure you don't take a long time in the shower or use all the hot water. If you keep to yourself then things will be easier for avoiding fights or problems.
Margaret: LIKE I SAID, I HAD TO BE RESPECTFUL AND COURTEOUS TO OTHERS AND MIND MY OWN BUSINESS. I DID MY OWN THING REALLY. WE WOULD SAY "IF IT DONT APPLY LET IT FLY". FOR THE MOST PART IT WASNT VERY HARD. OTHER INMATES ARE JUST TRYING TO GET THROUGH IT TOO.
Laura: Not brag or lie about something you didnt do. Dont call anyone any racial slurs, dont be a dirty woman, dont do anything to the deputies that will get the whole cell in trouble. DOnt disrespect anyone EVER whether its about their kids or their case.Donttrade or borrow something like a service orpromise to do something and dont come through.Do your fair share of cleaning. The utmostimportant thing though isto be respectful of personal space and of other inamates.

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Shawn: No
Tom: No. We were all in one big ass dorm room. We had approximately at the time I think 180 bunk beds. It could get quite rank in there as well.
Linda: No you were not able to chose your cellmate. In the two months I was there I had 4 different cellmates. There is no specific time that your cellmate changes.
Margaret: IM NOT SURE HOW OFTEN CELLMATES WERE CHANGED. BUT, YOU DEFINITELY COULD NOT CHOOSE YOUR CELL MATE. IT WOULDVE BEEN NICE, BUT IT AINT HAPPENING. ITS ALL UP TO THE GUARDS.
Laura: It wasnt a 2 man cell, nore like a dorm. No you cant choose your own cellmate. If anything they would want to seperateyou if they knewyou related orfriends or defendants in the same case. Your fellow cellmates would change depending on the crime they had committed.
