Interview with Shawn, Tom, Linda, Margaret and Laura
JM: How often could you receive visitors? Shawn: 3 times a week Tom: I only received visitors approximately 3 times while
I was in. My family didnt have a vehicle to get
around in. Linda: We were able to get visits 3 times a week.
The visits were only.15 min. Margaret: I BELIEVE IT WAS TWICE TO THREE TIMES PER
WEEK, LIKE A WEDNESDAY AND A SATURDAY
OR SOMETHING. Laura: you could have visitors from Wednesday-Saturday.
you have to make an appoinment 24 hours in
advance.
JM: Was the check-in process lengthy for those who came to see you? Shawn: No Tom: It was very long. They took the persons IDs, ran
background checks, then they had to call the
inmate to let them know they had a visitor. From
there we would be escorted when there was enough
people at one time, usually 5-8 inmates getting
visitors. We would be escorted by a Sheriff deputy
to the visiting area. Linda: Yes. The visitors had to check in an hour
before the time they scheduled to visit.
Then they had to wait in line til they were
called through. Margaret: THE PROCESS FOR CHECKING IN WASNT TOO
BAD ITSELF, IT WAS THE LINES THEY WOULD
HAVE TO WAIT IN BEFORE THE ACTUAL
CHECKING IN PART. Laura: I do not know. When I am in jail it is easier
for me to do my time without having anyone come
and visit me
JM: What was the visiting environment like? Shawn: Loud not private, dirty and nomitored every word Tom: It was very loud and crowded. We talked on phones
(like they show on tv and movies) and the
conversations were on average 15- 20 mins. There
was a time when they put the entire jail on lock-
down and visitation came to a screeching halt.
Everyone was told to leave, the inmates escorted
by multiple Sheriffs back to their locations. Linda: The environment was loud. It was
through glass on a telephone and it is
hard to get in everything you want to say
in 15 min especially when there are more
than one person coming to visit you. It is
hard for the visitors to concentrate with
all the noise in the room. Margaret: THE VISITING ENVIRONMENT IS NOT THE
NICEST THING. ITS BETWEEN GLASS, IN A
CONCRETE ROOM, WITH DIRTY GLASS
BETWEEN YOU AND NASTY PHONES. NOT
TO MENTION THE FACT THAT FOR THE
MOST PART THE CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS
TURN THE PHONES OF MIDSENTENCE WITH
OUT ANY KIND OF WARNING AHEAD OF
TIME. Laura: once again I do not know. for me it would be to
hard to see my children through glass and talk
on the phone fpr 15 mins and not be able to hug
them and when they left and I could not leave
with them that would break my heart and I would
have an even rougher time in jail.
