Telephones

Interview with Hugh, Jennifer and Johnny

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Hugh: Just collect calls.
Jennifer: They were like pay phones and you cant make a call to someone unless someone had a callingcard on there phone.
Johnny: I had regular access to telephones: yes.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Hugh: $3 something per connection and up to 50 cents per minute.
Jennifer: Inmates dont pay for the calls but if you wana talk to them then you have to pay.
Johnny: I do not believe that I was charged for calling people. I can't say what the average inmate spends per week on phone calls.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Hugh: Your family could put time on their cell phones.
Jennifer: No, but the person on the other line needs one to accept
Johnny: No: no phone card was needed to call out.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Hugh: There was a message that would let you know your phone call was being recorded.
Jennifer: Im not sure but i bet they did they read your mail so i dont dout it.
Johnny: Not to my knowledge: no.
