JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Travis: We had pod time around 10 a.m. for (1.5-2 hours),
maybe 5 days out of the week and around 8 p.m.
(1.5-2 hours) maybe 5 days out of the week. There
you could socialize with usually almost everyone
in the pod, and the tv was on during which it was
watchable sometimes. The channel could be
switched. When we were in our cells, the tv was
often on but very difficult to impossible to see
and hear through the window in the door.
Sometimes the radio was on, which was loud enough
for all the cells to hear, but it did not make
much difference and was even unbearable when they
played the same music day after day for months. Grant: there were religious ceremonies , ged school
program ,anger management groups , cosmetology
classes , laundry work and kitchen duty
details.also a base ball diamond to use at inmate
yard time.that was about it ,all other
recreational stuff inmates had to come up with
our selves like beat making and rap or singing
competitions
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Travis: It was pretty much impossible to get choice of
channel on tv. It was often on channel 2. It was
sometimes watchable, I.e. Right this Minute was
ok. Anyone could see it of course. The radio was
pretty much outside of the control of inmates. To
socialize you did not need to compete of course. Grant: only real entertainment was the t. v. , which
only got 4 or 5 channles so inmates usualy took
a vote on what and when to watch certain programs
or inmate favorites like maury show , divorce
court or cops to name just a few daily t v
favorites of inmates
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Travis: I did not try to stay in shape. I tried not to
eat too much, I think gaining weight is much
easier as you can't really walk around or do
anything there. I noticed my legs had atrophied
from lying all day I think. Grant: yes yard time was usualy every day where you
could play basket ball, exercise or walk or jog
laps around the yard
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Travis: We were almost never allowed to go outside. For
us the outside was nothing more than a room with
a half basketball court and no ceiling. We could
do pushups or jumping jacks in the cell, or I
suppose you could run around or jump around in
the pod. For me it was all too boring so I didn't
try. Grant: everyday and I usualy just walked the yard.i did
my physical exercise such as push ups jumping
jacks and squats while in the dorm pod
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Travis: Yes, I had only seen it maybe once a month at
most. I never went but sometimes I could see
there were people sitting and a preacher
screaming. Maybe 30 minutes long, an hour at most
I guess. Grant: yes, usualy on sundays sometimes for special
events as well though.the services were nice way
to get away from jail time
