JM: Tell us about the pre-sentencing process: Travis: I was arrested, interviewed and held at the
police station in a cell about 2 days. I was
driven to court, where I was told of my charges
and I agreed to a public defender. Then I tried
to represent myself and the public defender said
I was mentally incompetent. I had to stay at jail
for about 5 months while they had two
psychiatrists come over and then they waited for
a recommendation where to send me which was Napa
State Hospital. I spent 1.5 months there before I
was restored to competency. Then I was
transferred back to the jail and 1 month later I
was given probation and 1 day in prison. Grant: pre sentencing took atleast two months because of
over crowded population.every one has to wait on
d a to play with them regarding what punishment
they feel like dishing out at the time.sometimes
you can request a plea deal but not too often
becasuse calanders are too full to deal with in
dividual requests
JM: Did you have police stop by your house for questioning? If not please give us details on how you came to be arrested. Travis: No, I was arrested on the scene of the crime, a
pharmacy which I was attempting to rob. The
police disarmed me, took me to a hospital to
check my blood for drugs, then took me to a
police station for an interrogation, and then I
stayed in a cell until my first court date. After
this I went to directly to Santa Rita jail. I was
in tiny rooms with lots of people for probably 24
hours before making it to my cell. Grant: I was arrested while trying to evade police in a
stolen vehicle which turned into a foot
chase.Eventualy I was finaly captured by
officers , beat up and found with possession of
controlled substance in one of my pants pockets.i
was placed in custody and taken to north county
jail
JM: What was court like? Please give as many details as you recall. Travis: Going to court was always exciting due to the
potential for developing news. After breakfast
you had to wait about 5 hours in a room with many
people before around 9:00 you got on the bus. You
were taken to court and talked through a window
to your attorney and went to court to declare
whatever was needed. This took only a couple
minutes. You waited a couple hours there then you
went back and to the jail and again you waited
maybe 4 hours or so before going back to your
cell. Grant: It was the worst part,up an 1 1/2 early to be
escorted to holding.another 1/2 wait before
loaded on bus to be held another 3-4 hrs while
awaiting to be seen by judge, then another 1-2hr
wait for ride back to rita.then 1/2 hr wait to be
re processed and strip searched
JM: What were your original charges? What did you end up being convicted of? Travis: My original charges were Attempted armed robbery,
Burglary, and possession of a starter gun (all
felonies). I was convicted of only one M459
burglary (misdemeanor). Grant: possession of methamphetamine for use
