Leisure Time

Interview with Jen, Kelsey and Cody

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Jen: TV, 1-3 times a week you get to maybe go outside. Other then that there is no way to pass the time but bullshit with the other inmates.
Kelsey: Huh?
Cody: At Pre-Trial they had some books. Which were mostly crappy romance novels. There a few good legal thrillers but almost all of the books for some reason had pages torn off either the front or the very end. You could shower, or go play handball or basketball. In MainJail they really didn't have much of anything.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Jen: The TV was on a wall, and you could access the channel changer, but sometimes there were complaints about the channel selection; Spanish television, or the news channels that you couldn't recieve
Kelsey: Did Tupac show up and I missed him? Entertainment? Ohhh, you're talking about "yard" where you can go outside?
Cody: In Main Jail the TV outside the cell is on from 8 AM to 11 PM, but its so loud in there you can never hear it. In Pre-Trial the TV is on 24/7 so you can even hear it all night long playing out there on the bottom tier.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Jen: Actually I lost about 20 lbs. I had time to exercise in my cell, and I refused to eat most of their food. Not to mention that the food was bad, and tasteless.
Kelsey: In the 80's the food was pretty good and you could gain weight.... TULARE COUNTY HAD BETTER FOOD comparing county jails. Nobody beat the roadcamp in Caruthers.... Steaks (I kid you not!) and fresh bakery items! A baker from Reedley was doing time for DUI!!!! OMG! I could not button my pants when I went home! I only did 90 DAYS! As the 90's rolled around the food became unbearable and everyone (both counties) walked out thinner unless they had $ coming in regularly.
Cody: Yeah I was really depressed and didn't feel like exercising. I did lose about 10-15 lbs in there though because I really just didn't want to eat anything.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Jen: I only remember in the month I stayed we went out 2 times. The year before when I stayed in jail waiting to get out on O.R. We never went outside.
Kelsey: Back in the day.... TULARE: Once a week we went to the roof & Fresno Co., never from the county! 1990's TULARE: (where I did most of my time) GP was offered GRASS yard a couple times a week. #11. Same, couple times a week but concrete floors!
Cody: In Main Jail, not at all. Pre-Trial you could go in the little yard whenever you weren't on lockdown. So in Main Jail people would do a lot of workout routines and things everyday.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Jen: In General population the church was offered in the open and you could join in if you wanted to. I don't remember the church ever even being offered in the Minimal security block.
Kelsey: They came inside the units in Tulare County.
Cody: In Main Jail no. In Pre-Trial I believe they had Bible studies and things sometimes but I don't really know as I personally never went.
