Closing Advice

Interview with Ralph, Rachel, Fred, Craig and Joe

JM: What else would you want a friend or family member to know if they have a loved one going to this jail?
Ralph: That everything will be ok and to have there friend or family really think about there life so they wont have to ever go back again.
Rachel: Be strong, keep to yourself, have money on your books to buy commissary, don't be naive, read a lot. Don't make new friendships in there and continue them on the outside.
Fred: well i would warn them about the people that work there, police officers or guards or whatever you want to call them. there are some that are really mean to you and they could get under your skin.
Craig: BOND THEM OUT!They will get very little excerise, mistreated, picked on, and so forth. And this is by the GUARDS!!! The food is unhealthy and the entire commissary system probably has judges and sheriifs for stockholders. Like the half-way houses.
Joe: Thats tough to say, put money on their books so they can get phone cards, and buy snacks and hygiene products. Not all jobs pay $10, if you work in the kitchen or in the laundry you will not get any money for commissary.

JM: If somebody knows they will be serving time in this jail what is your advice to them?
Ralph: no
Rachel: Follow the rules, don't push the system. The guardsand/or inmates can make your life a living hell if you do
Fred: my advice would find things to take up time...try to work in the jail, go to the classes they offer, make sure you have money to get commissary, and do alot of thinking of why your there and to make sure to never return.
Craig: Stay focused. They cant keep you forever. Keep your head about you. The guards are liabe to test you before the inmates do. Unless you can get food from commissary, dont move around too much. Save your energy.
Joe: You can mail yourself paper, stamps and envelopes to yourself before you remand yourself. Check out the website and get all the details of what to expect. Bring money if you can, I went in with $500, minus the $30 booking fee and I had $470 left over. With the money I made earning 10$ a week, I only spent $70 while I was there for 106 days. Most of this was spent on snacks. You will have to work at this facility if you are sentenced, otherwise you will be shipped to the county jail. I'm not sure but if you refuse to work while here, you can wind up serving 1100% of your sentence.

JM: Please list any other jail or rehab facilities you have been to.
Ralph: adams county jail
Rachel: No, thank God!
Fred: n/a
Craig: Arapahoe County Jail
Joe: I've been to Cook County and Will County jail in Illinois.
