JM: Did you have regular access to telephones? Ralph: yes Rachel: Yes, there was a wall I the dorm of about 5 pay phones, but
you couldn't talk on them past a certain hour I think it was 9
or 10 Fred: yes but of course it'll cost you. Craig: Regular? Sure. When they feel like it, in
accordance with regulations or not, is regular
in its own way. Joe: Yes, between the hours of 8AM and 10PM. However
during meals and productive day videos, I was not
allowed to use the phone.
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls? Ralph: well you would have to buy a pay card which is a
telephone card and or outside people can put it on
there credit card Rachel: I think it was around $2.50 I always called collect and wasn't
the one paying Fred: again it does depends but where i was it was like
20 for like 15 minutes. Craig: Wow. Monopolies are NOT illegal within the
commissary sytem for penal institutions of any
kind, so they charge what they like and the jail
gets their cut. One can go through $20 or more
in one day - if they can afford, long distance,
etc etc. Joe: Your best bet is putting money on your books, when
you do this the jail is going to take $30 out as a
booking fee, this is a one time charge. You can
then buy phone cards. A 5.20$ card will get you
two local calls of a half hour each. Intrastate
calls eat up your time at .15 a minute and a 2.60
connection fee. Interstate calls are roughly .24 a
minute without a connection fee.= As for collect
calls I imagine they were more expensive. I
originally setup a phone account online through
securus of $75, that was a mistake. I got about 10
phone calls from that because of all their surcharges.
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out? Ralph: yes Rachel: No you van callcolect Fred: you can purchase calling time in the jail Craig: Of course!!! They want their money FIRST! Duh! Joe: No you do not, please refer to the previous answer
JM: Did the jail screen your calls? Ralph: i believe do Rachel: More than likely. You pretty much relinquish your
Constitutional rights when you are in jail, I'm sure all the
phone calls are screened. You would have to be pretty dumb
to think that they are not listening. Fred: yes calls thru there are recorded Craig: Whether they admit or not, OF COURSE!! Joe: Yes the jail does screen your calls.
