Interview with mitchell, Stewart, Adam, Jeffrey, Brent and Daryll
JM: How many different blocks were there? mitchell: 3 Stewart: I know there are 4 blocks per floor on the one
side of the jail and there are 5 floors and there
is another side of the same jail that was open
bay dorms and I am unsure how many of those there
are Adam: there were four floors,,,top three each had three
dorms with females on top each from 60-80 inmates
each.. old jails I think holds close to 3000 Jeffrey: I think there were about 36 blocks. some were 2
man cells and some were open bay type dorms Brent: 5 floors with 4 blocks per floor Daryll: 4 per floor, there were 5 floors and then on the
other side of the jail, the older side which
should be condemned there were 3 floors with open
bay dorms and 4 dorms per floor there
JM: Did they have names? If so, what were they? mitchell: east side west side n north side Stewart: the main jail itself has a nickname of "castle
grey skull but the blocks were identified by
floor # and a color Adam: 2 north, 2 east and 2 west and so forth for each
floor Jeffrey: they went by a color and number system that was
done by floor number Brent: they were identified by a floor number and a color Daryll: the jail itself has the nick name of castle grey
skull because it is a nasty run down building but
the blocks them selves were determined by floor
number with a color
JM: Which types of inmates were housed in the different blocks? mitchell: the trustees were in north side which had fewer
girls in there the other were for everyone else Stewart: I don't think there was any type of real
classification going on because we even had
inmates in our block from rival gangs and I would
think at the very least they would want to
separate them Adam: all the high risk and guys charged with assult
and so forth are housed in the new jail and lower
risk are housed in the new jail. there is also
different housing for in different building for
work release Jeffrey: there was no rhyme or reason to how they
classified the inmates in to housing units. even
those that were obviously mentally un balanced
were just thrown in with every one else, people
with staph, whatever they did not care Brent: there was no method to the way they classified
and housed inmates. unless it was a totally
obvious situation, they just put you where ever
they had room to put you Daryll: there was no real classification process, they
just threw people where ever there was room. in
the block I was on there were older and younger
people. some people had mental health issues. you
would think they would want to classify people so
that they don't have trouble makers on every
block, just keep them together so they can put
extra officers on those blocks to control the
situations that broke out like fights
JM: What do you remember being the nicest and worst parts about the different blocks? mitchell: there wasn't nothing nice different co.s treated
you different some of them looked @ you like the
worst person in the world n would put you in the tank
for no reason Stewart: I am not proud of the fact that ive been in my
fair share of county jails 3 different states
including Philadelphia pa. but I can honestly say
that the Escambia county jail is the absolute
worst jail in every category. terrible food, lack
of any type of supervision, no cleaning supplies
ever, have to beg for toilet paper and could only
seem to get it if about 10 to 12 inmates started
acting up to get the c/o`s attention, medical was
a joke and there was outbreak of mrsa, staff
rudeness, it is the worst jail ive ever seen. I
have not been in any trouble in 8 plus years and
the Escambia county jail was the last county jail
ive been to. maybe I should thank them Adam: I was only in one dorm besides the holding dorm
downstairs you stay in till they assign you to a
dorm upstairs. I don't think there was any nice
part to any of it. Small dorm area for the
amount of inmates in each dorm and for one
officer in each dorm the all they do is sit
behind a desk and talk on phone or play on there
phone or tablets. Jeffrey: there was nothing nice about any of it at all
toilets open to view, showers open to view,
terrible food , no air conditioning just vents to
recycle the air, the c/os treated people with no
respect or dignity, medical was a waste of time
actually medical was a joke Brent: there was nothing at all that was nice about this
jail. peeling paint, no real air circulation,
cold showers that offered no privacy at all right
next to the phones so if you were on the phone
you could not hear over the water. no library,
hardly ever any rec yard time, terrible food Daryll: there was absolutely nothing good about this
jail. I have been in quite a few jails in my
stupid days and I could look back and say this
was good about this one and this was bad about
that one but the Escambia county jail had not one
thing that was good about it
