Interview with Harry, Qtip, Hanna, DoneMyTime, Linda, Missy, Josh, Alex, Chrissy, Gary, Charlie, Melissa, Harley, Billy and Jimmy
JM: Did you have regular access to telephones? Harry: Yes, they give you access to the phones from 6:00am until 10:00
pm. Qtip: Yes Hanna: In the first POD they had two free telephone which had a list. You
could only use it twice and you had to sign up for your time slot the
night before. It also had one collect telephone. There were 5
phones, 3 worked. In the next POD all 5 phones worked but they
were no longer free calls, they were all collect. DoneMyTime: yes Linda: YES Missy: YES FROM 8:00 A.M. TO 11:00 P.M.. Josh: Yes. The Inmate Handbook indicates that the
telephones are turned off at 10:00 p.m.; however,
I found that the telephones in M-2 and L-2 were
available from 9 a.m. to Midnight. All calls
were collect calls and must be made to a land
line. Some pods had free phones, but many did
not and those that did often had inoperable
phones. Telephone calls cut off after 30 minutes
and automatically disconnect if the recipient
attempts to dial other numbers. Alex: Yes. The arrangement was weird. Half of the
telephones placed collect calls while the other
half placed direct calls.
The phones were only operable during certain hours
of the day. Chrissy: YES Gary: yes but cant afford the bill Charlie: Yes, although at times it could be hard to use them
because people would be on them all the time. Melissa: When in the pit before entering population there
are 4 phones available for women and 5 phones
available for men. Each sex has to use the phones
designated for their own sex. These calls are free
and you can use these phones as long as there is
good behavior from all of the inmates. If the
inmates upset the guards, the phones are shut off.
You are allowed 5 minutes. Once your 5 minutes is
up you need to sit down and allow someone else to
make a call. If no one else wants to use the phone
the guards will allow you to go back up. If you
and other inmates need to use the phones still,
you will just take turns. The guards will hang up
on inmates who after their first 5 minutes call
again if other inmates are waiting. Once I got
into general population and placed into my pod,
there were 3 phones. One phone was free of charge.
The inmates previously in the pod had a list with
names and added our names to the list when me and
the other new inmates walked in for use of the
free phone. I heard once you leave the first pod,
the other pods have phones but they are not free. Harley: yes but its not free Billy: YES WE ALL HAD ACRESS TOO THE PHONE Jimmy: no not really they cut them on where there ready
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls? Harry: You have to call collect; I believe it is a couple dollars even for a
local call. Qtip: 1.67 per call i believe Hanna: If it was a local collect call, it was a dollar something for the first
minute and .80 cents for every additional minute. The time limit
on these calls was 30 minutes. And you had this annoying
recording that came one three times during your 30 minutes
which wasted you time slot. If you made a long distance call, it
was $4.54 for the first minute and then $1.00 for every
additional minute, with a 30 minute time limit as well. DoneMyTime: collect only an average 30 minute call $32.00 Linda: LONG DISTANCE Missy: 1.75 PER CALL. Josh: The collect calls were assessed to the recipient
and were approximately 7 cents per minute. Alex: None. However, with any phone you used, when the
person you call answers, they hear this overly
long and pointless recorded message and just about
everyone I called hung up before that message was
done. Chrissy: BILLING BY THE MINUTES WITH GLOBAL TELLIN Charlie: I am unsure about the average inmate, but my mom put
$20 on the phone a month for me and I was only able
to call about twice a month, sometimes only once. Melissa: I do not know this information. Harley: they charges alot 5 dollars a call , a week u
well spend up too $ 80 dollars Billy: 100 DOLLARS A WEEK, YES WEALL HAD TOO PAY FOR
THE PHONES YOUR PEOPLE ON THE OUTSIDE HAD TOO
PUT MONEY ON YOUR PHONE THEN U CANT FROM INSDE
THE JAIL Jimmy: your family had too put money on the phone so u
can call out 100 dollars a week for me
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out? Harry: No, it was all collect only. Qtip: Nope Hanna: No, but whom ever you where call on the outside could buy
minutes to put on their phone so that it would work like a pre-paid
phone. DoneMyTime: no you are not allowed. that would be a fair
thing to do so your loved ones don't have to pay
expensive fees Linda: MY FAMILY HAD TO ADD MIN. TO THEIR PHONE. Missy: NO. Josh: No. This is not permitted. Alex: No. Chrissy: NO Charlie: No, the person you wanted to call had to put money on
their phone number through the jail in order for you
to call them. Melissa: I do not know this information. Harley: no u cant buy phone cards.. u have too put money
on your phone in the free word Billy: NO YOUR PEOPLE PUT MONEY ON THE PHONE 4 U Jimmy: no just have too have money on your phone
JM: Did the jail screen your calls? Harry: I heard that they did monitor phone calls but was never caught
saying or doing anything wrong. Qtip: sure did Hanna: Yes DoneMyTime: yes, it says so on the recording Linda: I'M PRETTY SURE THEY DID. Missy: OF COURSE. Josh: No, but they may be monitored as inidcated by a
conspicuous disclosure. Alex: Possibly. I would not know. Chrissy: YES THEY SCREEN EVERY CALL\ Gary: of course they do Charlie: Yes, the jail monitored all calls made, and would
disconnect you if you were talking to people you were
not allowed to talk to, for example, someone related
to your case. Melissa: A recording comes on after you dial a number and
tells you the jail records all calls. Harley: yes all the time they screen all calls Billy: YES THEY DID EVERYBODYS CALLS Jimmy: yes they did everybody calls like that
