Inmates

Interview with Trisha, Jared and Lucia

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Trisha: Off and on. It depends on who you are with. Sex offenders and rapists definitely have a harder time than others. They usually put them in specific areas to protect them.
Jared: It was easy for me to do my time. But I wouldn't say easy for me to get along I'm a African american and this state has a lot of convicted racist white man
Lucia: being in the pod that i was in almost everyone got along. i had no quarrels with other inmates. but then again a bunch of people being around eachother 24/7 for sometimes months at a time there will be some sort of verbal or physical altercation.

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Trisha: I've only gotten in 2 fights and it was over cards. When people have been there for awhile they get touchy about their where they sit in the common area. You just get up and move if you are in somebody's place and they call you on it. The TV can become a big conflict. You need to get to know what he informal rules are in the pod, such as when its OK to turn the TV on in the morning.
Jared: For me it was to find the other minorities . Being around the white men we're just weird. They would always try to make black jokes and ask. Me stupid questions.I really started reading to isolate myself from the shit starters. I also play pinochle with the inmates I do get along with.
Lucia: to avoid fights? mostly being honest with people. not in an insulting way but being upfront and using "I" statements. not being accusitory. Reading definitly helped. its a big distraction. avoiding religious talks, and not trying to change the TV chanel during the price is right, or other insignificant shows like dancing with the starts or american idol.

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Trisha: There were times that I didn't get along with my cellmate and when I told the cops we didn't get along they moved us.
Jared: The inmates were giving to whoever wherever. They didn't care it was to their convenience, which made it a guessing game of if your roomy would be a rapist or killer they just placed you on floors and all.
Lucia: i was in a pod with about 26 women. we were not able to chose the cellmate but were able to tell the deputies if we did have any enemies in the jail they should know of so that they cpuld try to ensure our saftey
