JM: Did you get off early based on good behavior? Seth: yes they gave me 15% off for good time or a year
and couple months Clark: In Indiana, only people serving time in state
prison facilities are eligible to have their
sentence reduced and 'get off early'. In these
prison facilities it is possible to have up to
twice the credit for every day served, effectively
halving your sentence. In the jail facilities,
some people would go into special programs such as
Substance Abuse class so that it looked better to
their case manager when they would later be
transferred to prison or during sentencing. Most
of the people in the jail facility were just there
awaiting sentencing.
In my case, I was awarded time served credit that
would have went towards my total time sentenced
had I spent the whole 1.5 year sentence in the
jail or a prison facility but it doesn't count
towards time ordered served on probation. I did
receive a discharge from probation early for good
behavior. I was able to get off of probation
almost 4 months early, so I only served 1 year and
2 months on probation total. Lisa: No I believe that was not availible at the jail
JM: What is the most time off you can receive for good behavior? Seth: 15% federal or 50% state Clark: If serving your sentence in an Indiana state
prison facility, you can serve only half of your
sentence if you have good behavior. There are
also other programs that allow for additional time
reductions, such as earning a degree/GED, etc.
Not sure how much these qualify a person for. Lisa: I am not really sure
JM: What types of actions do you need to avoid in order to get time off? Did you ever witness somebody losing time off for good behavior? Seth: basically and thing you would do on the streets
plus listen to the guard's don't fight don't get
caught gambling avoid the people who smoke when
its snuck in Clark: I did see some people getting time added on for
acting poorly but never seeing anyone losing good
behavior time, again as most of these people were
awaiting their own sentencing and in Indiana
people do not get good behavior credit while in a
county jail facility.
Things like getting in fights with other inmates,
getting caught with jail paraphernalia (i.e.
tobacco/drugs) were enough to be removed from the
cell block and placed into isolation for a period
(a week to a month usually, depending on severity
of offense) and in some cases, additional charges
were brought. Lisa: I know some of yhe wome went to lockup
because of there behaviors. I don't know whether
they lost any of there time or not
