JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Viktor: Law library, books, cards, TV, church, AA. At
Osage and Chase we got some outside time every
day, shoot basketball or just exercise, walk,
bible study, etc. Veronica: . the county jail only offered like AA but there
are only certain amount of spaces In the class so
you feel out a application and if you get
excepted and they have a spot available you get
in the class if they don't you wait till they
have a spot available. Paula: Not much cause there are so many people there.
You could go to Church two times a week. Or you
could go to the Law library once or twice a week.
YOu can do reck every day but other than that you
do nothing at all. No school nothing availably.
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Viktor: The guards were in charge of what we watched. Veronica: the only thing you had was a TV set and you had
to agree on what to watch or they would just turn
it off or if there is a lot of noise they turn it
off. if you have money you can buy a headset for
music. but it cost Paula: There was a tv available 2 per pod. And if people
didn't agree on what to watch they took the tv
away from you turned it off. But usually the
first person out there told the guards what they
wanted to watch and that was it. Unless you
wanted to argue then they just turned it off.
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Viktor: I gained weight, but I needed to. You can always
exercise. Veronica: you could have exercise time 1 hour a day but if
it was real early you missed it sometimes so
that's all Paula: You can do reck once a day sometimes it like 8am
and the only thing available in a little area
with a basketball goal. but you could walk around
in circles over and over.
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Viktor: Never in Johnson County. Once a day when farmed
out. Veronica: In Johnson county you never went outside. there
was just a little wreck one you got to go into
where you could walk or play basketball that was
all. Paula: You never actually went outside. You stayed in
the building at all times. They would never let
you outside. You never see the sunshine until you
actually get out of jail.
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Viktor: Yes. As I recall they were non-denominational,
held at various times. Veronica: yes every Saturday a preacher would come into the
pod during one of the lock downs and invite you
to come and join. Paula: Yes they offered them. 2x a week. But sometimes
the church people didn't show up. Or they would
be late. It only lasted for 50 minutes. maybe?
