JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Bruce: Before I went to work in the Kitchen the African
American inmates insisted on watching BET and COPS
on the TV. So much so that they were willing to
fight over it. So it was easier to go along. There
were some books available and if I remember right
there was a library of sorts there. Elvira: There was the gym on thursday and friday. Besides
that you have games that you can play, watch t.v..
Get a book when the library lady comes around.
There was times when we would walk from one side of
the dorm to the other, to make sure we get some
sort of exercise.
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Bruce: Before I went to work in the Kitchen the African
American inmates insisted on watching BET and COPS
on the TV. So much so that they were willing to
fight over it. So it was easier to go along. After I
moved down to work in the kitchen we all pretty much
agreed on what to watch. Elvira: There was the rule in our dorm that if you wanted
to have control over the t.v. to watch something
that you wanted to watch then you would have to get
up and clean. If you didn't clean then you would
watch whatever everyone was watching. So that was
the only competition with the t.v..
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Bruce: Yes there was no exercise area. we could do push ups
in our cell or we could walk the around the block.
Everyone puts on weight. Elvira: Well with as bad as the food is in there, you will
lose weight. But yes if you just sleep all day and
not get up and walk or get up and go to gym.
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Bruce: I was never allowed to go outside.when I was over
the old police station we had windows, but working
down in the kitchen we never saw daylight. Elvira: You never get to go outside. So the only exercise
that you get while in jail is going to the gym. Or
do like we did and that was to walk back and forth
in a fast mode.
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Bruce: Church services were offered once or twice a week
but once I moved down to the kitchen none were
offered. It really didn't make since for us because
our shift was midnight to 11am. so we would have
been sleeping when church was going on. Elvira: Yes the jail offered church. It was held on
different days. There was wednesday, friday, and
sunday. Sometimes they would come on different
days. But church was mostly great.
