Meals

Interview with Bruce and Elvira

JM: How many meals did you get per day?
Bruce: We received 3 meals a day plus snacks at night.
Elvira: You get 3 meals a day.

JM: How would you rate the food? Please give details of why.
Bruce: on a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate it as a 5. While housed over the old police station there never seemed to be enough but once I was moved to work in the kitchen our meals were a lot larger portions. Our meals were prepared by the next shift. We perpared the meals for the other shift so we took care of each other.
Elvira: There is some days there that the food was so terrible, it was unbareable to even eat. The food of course is bland. But then there was days that the food was not half bad, as long as you had lots of salt and pepper. There was always a vegetable and a fruit of some sort on there.

JM: Did you have any favorite/least favorite meals?
Bruce: Diner was the best meal of the day. Lunch many times were sandwiches. Breakfast wasn't bad. We eat a lot of grits.
Elvira: The best thing I ate there was the chicken block is what we called it. It was chicken, rice, and gravy mixed together. The favorite breakfast was the pancakes. The least favorite was the chili, there was several meals where they included the chili and it was nasty, beans hard as can be. The sausage was just terrible also.

JM: Were there any other snacks offered outside of meals? What was commissary like and how expensive was it?
Bruce: Yes we got snacks. The commissary was fine as long as you had money on your books. I was lucky. I had family put money into my account every two weeks. The prices were a little high. Like shopping at a Circle K vs Walmart
Elvira: Yes, you get a bologna sandwich on friday and saturday nights at midnight. There was also commissary. They really arent that expensive. It was like going to a store and buying the food seperatly. Making it not so bad.
