JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Jorge: Board games on 5th floor. 2 TV's. When it was
nice outside they let you go out in rec area and
play basketball. A lot of church services,
various nights... volunteers would come in. Jeannette: books were availiabe the trusties or the deputies
got to pick tv channels, magizines where there 2,
i read alot of different books while i waqs there
also ppl could write you Larry: The only things they allowed us to do to help pass the time
was watch television and once a week you were allowed to
pick a book off the book cart. They did have a outdoor
basketball court but you could rarely use it. I often played
cards to pass the time.
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Jorge: You could only change the TV channel if you were
a trustee. Jeannette: there where a lot of chairs in the common area but
i never watched anything so i really have no idea Larry: When we were allowed to play basketball it was unlikely that
you would get a chance to play unless you were a part of the
group that dominated that block. If you did get to play it was
always very rough and you had to watch yourself. Fights were
often started and injuries occurred frequently.
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Jorge: Yes because there weren't weights. You can pass
time by working out in your cell though. Jeannette: i didnt eat anything while i was there because the
food looked gross so i lost 25 lbs Larry: Not at all actually, I had a lot more time to concentrate on my
workouts and it was somewhat easier because it passed time.
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Jorge: When it was nice, every other day, depending on
the deputy that was working. Jeannette: no one was allowed outside there where huge barred
windows you could look out of tho
seriously why is there a word minimum , Larry: The basketball courts were on the fourth floor and there were
were at the top of brick walls that let you see outside but that
was the only thing close to going outside.
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Jorge: Yes. They were offered quite often but not sure
of a set schedule. Jeannette: yes every day they had bible study and 2 x a week
they offered church in a visiting room on the floor Larry: Yes, the church services were actually very inspirational and
helped keep a positive out look on situations what ever they
might have been.
