Telephones

Interview with Ralph and Alex

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Ralph: 4 phones in each pod. They were turned on whenever you were out of your cell.
Alex: You have full access to the phones whenever not locked down or cleaning and dinner.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Ralph: It varies. Usually, $1.50 to make a land line call and .15 cents a minute for cell phone.
Alex: Washington county phone system is done by Securus Technologies and I did not like it. You must set up an account in-order to make any calls including collect and they charge $1.35 connect fee and .35 cents a minute for every call. Most guys on average would use the phone 1-2 times a day.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Ralph: Yeah, you could buy a call for $10 for 10 minutes.
Alex: You could buy $1.00 or $20.00 from canteen but same charges applied.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Ralph: All the time for sure.
Alex: All calls are recorded unless to a lawyer.
