JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Rachel: TV, OR READING BOOKS. I WAS NOT ALLOWED TO THE
YARD. (LET ME AGAIN SAY I AM OVER 50 AND COULD
BARELY DEAL WITH CLIMBING TO THE TOP BUNK, MUCH
LESS CLIMBING A FENCE TO ESCAPE) PLEASE. Paula: Weight room, outside basketball court, inside
gym/track, program classes such as A.A., N.A.,
Bible study, church services, Law Library.
Inmates would look to go to just about any
activity if it meant getting out of the cell.
Even a simple task as getting a haircut would be
looked forward to. Lindsey: Types of facilities to pass time that were
available were recreation time, which took place
in a smelly gym r outside, church, reading the
books that were offered and NA or AA meetings. And
even though I wasn't on drugs or a alcoholic I
still went to listen to everyone else stories and
to just simply pass the time.
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Rachel: IF LARGE, BIG-MOUTHED BLACK LADIES WANTED
SOMETHING IT WAS BETTER TO JUST LET THEM HAVE IT
THAN TO DISAGREE. Paula: Entertainment consisted of only watching TV. It
was a 9 inch black and white TV at that. However
the TV was allowed to be on 24/7 and the
station/volume was directly controlled by the
inmates in the cell. No cable so sometimes the
sound would come through but the picture
was "snowy." Lindsey: The "vets" as i called them the women that had
been in that tank the longest pretty much dictated
what we watched on tv everyday. They wold have
their whole little scheduele of their favorite
shows everyday. The few arguments and fights I did
happen to witness during my stay there were
actually because of the tv.
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Rachel: NOT REALLY. THEY DON'T OVER-FEED YOU. Paula: I personally did as I don't exercise too much.
Plus the food wasn't great so I started eating a
lot of junk food off the canteen list. Lindsey: I actually lost ALOT of weight during my stay in
jail because I gave ha nasty food away almost
everyday. I am a very pick eater normally but when
your literally starving you would be surprised at
what you will eat.
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Rachel: ZERO. Paula: Outside consisted of a brick enclosed 12' X 12'
concrete square with an open ceiling covered by
razor wire. The only thing to really do is walk
the "track" so to speak. You could always do
pushups in the cell if outside recreation was
cancelled due to weather or lack of staff Lindsey: Even if the weather permitted going outside depended
on the guard that was in charge of rec time for that
would be the one to decide if we went outside or to
the gym. I think I went outside and seen the
sunlight twice in 23 days.
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Rachel: YES. I BELIEVE THEY HAD DIFFERENT
PREACHERS/MINISTERS COME IN ONCE A WEEK FROM
DIFFERENT CHURCHES. I ENJOYED IT PRETTY WELL AS
I WAS NOT ANY PARTICULAR DENOMINATION THAT WOULD
OBJECT TO THAT VARIETY. I BELIEVE THEY WERE
HELD AT DIFFERENT TIMES ON SUNDAY. REALLY THAT
SHOULD BE ON SATURDAY, THE SABBATH. Paula: Jail services were offered and they were held in
the jail cafeteria. I didn't attend to know what
they were like as I am an atheist Lindsey: Yes and also offered bible study. I went to both.
Church was ever Sunday and bible study was every
Wednesday. The services would be held b a different
church ever week so depending on which church came
would determine how good of a service t was for me
at least.
